This Scholarship is funded annually by Dr. Andrew P. Wightman of Evergreen Oral Surgery in Tacoma. The purpose of the scholarship is to both encourage and assist students who demonstrate a desire to enter the field of dentistry.
The scholarship will be awarded to two graduates – one each from Franklin Pierce High School and Washington High School – who intend to pursue a career in the dental field. Potential areas of study include, but are not limited to: general dentistry, dental hygienist or registered dental assistant.

The Faculty Scholarship Committee of each high school will select one recipient and one alternate annually. The scholarship shall be awarded to the alternate if the primary award winner does not meet the requirements of the scholarship.
About Dr. Andrew P. Wightman
Dr. Wightman attended the University of Utah for his undergraduate education and proceeded to Boston University School of Dental Medicine. He graduated dental school Cum Laude (“With Honors”), also receiving awards in oral medicine, oral surgery, oral pathology, and a research award for a study on the relationship between oral care and diabetes control. At Boston University he was invited to join Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Dental Honor Society that promotes and recognizes scholarship and character among students of dentistry.
After completion of dental school in Boston, Dr. Wightman joined the United States Air Force and completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In residency he experienced intensive training in implant planning and implant surgery, corrective jaw surgery, tooth extraction, trauma, facial reconstruction, repair of congenital defects, plastic surgery, general surgery, pediatric surgery, and cosmetic facial surgery. Dr. Wightman also completed extensive training in anesthesia techniques, and internal medicine.
In August 2013 Dr. Wightman and his family moved to the Pacific Northwest and he opened his practice in Tacoma. His practice serves Tacoma and the greater South Sound region. Through the establishment of the Evergreen Oral Surgery Dental Scholarship it is Dr. Wightman’s hope to encourage and assist young students with a desire to enter the field of dentistry which has served him so well.
Dr. Wightman lives in Gig Harbor with his wife Lisa and four children. As a family they love all the amazing outdoor activities available in the Pacific Northwest. They are avid bikers, runners, water skiers, snow skiers, and can’t get enough of the most beautiful region in the world.
